ST. EDWARD
A St. Edward man was left at least temporarily homeless Tuesday when fire gutted his two-story home.
Miminegash deputy fire chief, Duffy Chaisson said no one was at home when the fire broke out. The alarm was called in around 8 a.m. by a neighbor who noticed smoke billowing from the eaves and roof.
Chaisson said the fire, which is believed to have started in the common area on the main level, almost starved itself of oxygen. “When we got there, it was in a critical (phase). It had just started to burn through the windows. It was at that point where, another five minutes it would’ve been completely flat.”
Miminegash Fire Department responded with 17 firefighters.
“The boys did a great job; as soon as they got there they had water on the fire and it was under control within minutes of us being in there,” the deputy chief commented.
Chaisson didn’t know whether the home could be salvaged. There was fire damage on the main level and extensive smoke damage throughout the structure, he said.
