ALBERTON

Freezing rain was mixed in with heavy rain in the Alberton area by 11 a.m. Saturday. Ice was accumulating on trees and signs, but there was still enough water flowing at that time that ice did not appear to be forming on roadways.

Environment Canada warns conditions could change rapidly as the temperature continues to drop and slippery conditions are expected to occur.

The temperature in West Prince had dipped to the freezing point by 11 a.m. when it was still showing 13 degrees in Summerside.

The heavy rainfall overnight and throughout the morning Saturday had ditches and streams in West Prince overflowing. Water was flowing out of some ditches onto roadways, creating traffic hazards that could get progressively worse as the runoff starts to freeze.

John Lane, coordinator of the Cascumpec Bay Watershed Association was out Saturday morning checking ponds and streams and reported many of them were approaching capacity as a result of the quick melt followed by heavy rainfall.
