SYDNEY, N.S. — Air Canada is investigating the cause of smoke detected in the cabin of a Jazz Aviation operated flight from Sydney to Toronto early Thursday morning that resulted in an emergency landing.

Shortly after express flight AC8219 departed the JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport en route to Toronto early morning with 29 passengers and a crew of four, the crew noticed a haze in the rear cabin. There was no fire.

In an email response to questions, Manon Stuart, a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation, said the haze was detected in the area of the rear bathroom, where the smoke detector activated. Stuart said as per their standard operating procedures the crew diverted to Moncton and requested priority landing.

The aircraft landed in Moncton safely and without incident at approximately 6:45 a.m. Emergency vehicles met and inspected the aircraft and confirmed there was no fire.

“When the aircraft landed the haze had already dissipated and the passengers deplaned normally at the gate,” Stuart stated in the email.

Passengers resumed their travel on the next flight departing from Moncton to Toronto, at noon Thursday. In the meantime, a maintenance crew was dispatched to Moncton to inspect the aircraft and proceed with the necessary repairs.

At this time Stuart said he is awaiting a report on the cause.

Stuart said they apologize to their customers for the inconvenience.

Jazz Aviation is Air Canada's largest regional partner.
