SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – The Summerside Community Choir (SSCC) is kicking off a new season with a new recruitment campaign.
The City of Summerside is joining the 40-year-old choir in embarking on a new concept of matching teens and seniors.
The intergenerational mentorship program, sponsored by the Age-friendly City Committee, matches youth and seniors according to their shared interests, like singing.
“SSCC thinks this would be a golden opportunity for youth and seniors to join our choir,” notes the choir’s release.
To join the choir, teenagers can simply come to one of the group’s Tuesday night practices at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Church, Summerside. New members of any age are welcome to give choir a try up until Jan. 30.
Bursary for P.E.I. students
“The choir always benefits from the voices, energy and camaraderie that youth bring,” noted the choir release.
As a registered organization, youth can take advantage of participating in the Community Service Bursary Program by joining the community choir. Grade 11 and 12 students may count up to 100 hours singing with the choir (at a rate of $5 per hour) towards a post-secondary bursary.
According to the choir release, an ear for music, a love of singing, and a commitment to rehearsal is all that is required to join. No audition is necessary.
“Singing is great exercise for your mind, body and spirit.”
