Ralph Arsenault described it as a nice meal. Pauline Hardy said it was a break from cooking. “And no dishes to wash,” added Donald Hardy. It was a nice outing on a nice day, he acknowledged.
They were among the 120 Tignish and area seniors who took in a free meal several Tignish and area organizations put on for them Sunday at the Tignish Parish Centre. Take-outs were delivered to another dozen people.
Meal contributors were Tignish Co-op and its Member Relations Committee, ADL, Clohossey Farms, Cute Road Farms, Acadian Machine Works, St. Simon and St. Jude Parish, Tignish Knights of Columbus, Tignish CWL, Tignish Legion, Town of Tignish and Caring Cupboard.
Although the meal was offered free of charge, several of the diners gave donations which will be applied towards supplies for the next meal.
Raeann Kinch was one of the more than 30 volunteers who pitched in to prepare and serve the hot turkey meal. She said organizers had no idea how many people to expect and were thrilled with the turn-out.
“I think it went pretty good,” she assessed, noting many of the diners also treated the free meal as a social outing.
The event had been in the planning stages since early December.
The organizing committee met Monday night to evaluate Sunday's event and, based on its popularity, decided to host another seniors meal next month. It will be held on Sunday, Feb. 25 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., at the Parish Centre.
