The Mack in Charlottetown will be full of wacky fun

Centre prop crew planning on making the Smith look as wacky as possible

Chef Michael Smith and his wife, Chastity, are throwing a big dinner party on Feb. 3, at The Mack in Charlottetown that promises good food, live music, glamorous attire and interactive dinner games. The event is designed to raise money for the Confederation Centre’s arts education programs.


CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Chef Michael Smith and his wife, Chastity, will throw one seriously riotous dinner party at The Mack in Charlottetown.

Ticket prices for the annual Confederation Centre of the Arts fundraiser are $200 per person. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. on Feb. 3.

Money raised goes to support arts education programs at the centre and tax receipts will be issued for a portion of the price.

Those who attend will be doing more than just eating a fine meal. They’ll be participating in a whole lot of fun and every single person gets to play along.

“These are interactive dinner parties and I do them across Canada on a regular basis. I do them for 500 to 600 people at a time, but this is the first time we’ve done one on the Island,’’ Michael Smith said. “Layered on this is a whole musical component.’’

For those who don’t know, Chastity is a singer-songwriter on the Island who plays with Soul Food Trio. The jazz band, comprised of Smith, Jon Rehder and Reg Ballagh, will be adding some talent to the night of the fundraiser. Todd MacLean is joining the group to lend his help.

“It will be jazz throughout the ages. We’re just looking forward to coming together for a show,’’ Chastity Smith said. “It’s going to be fun (and there will be) theatrical elements to what’s happening on stage as well as what Michael will be providing.’’

The chef said The Mack will be decked out by the centre’s props team. They’re even planning on making the Smith look as wacky as possible.

Atlantic Beef Products is donating meat, while Raspberry Point Oysters will also be supporting the event with mouth watering treats.

Each of the tables will have an envelope assigning those patrons with specific tasks. There will be a best cook, worst cook, dishwasher, rock star, paparazzi and a bartender. Each table will also have some Play-Doh on it for those who will be asked to sculpt. Awards will be presented for the best sculptures.

And, it all comes with a four-course meal cooked by Smith and the chef from Mavors.

Fraser McCallum, communications manager for the Confederation Centre of the Arts, likes how things are shaping up for this event.

“This is the first time we’ve collaborated with Michael and this is a really cool opportunity,’’ McCallum said. “Chef Michael and Chastity love the arts so it’s the start of something.’’

Smith seems equally as enamoured with the centre.

“This is the perfect venue for an artistic dinner party and it’s the perfect cause to do something wacky like this, to try and make it fun for the guests,’’ he said.

“We all get called upon to go to fundraising dinners. You get rubber chicken and run out of things to talk about after 10 minutes and it’s boring and there’s a speech and it’s boring so we’re trying to inject some life into it. Expect to get out of your seats; expect to play; that’s really what the evening is all about.’’
