Local cadet takes part in Exercise Sub-Zero

SUMMERSIDE - A Summerside teen took part in the annual cadet Regional Winter Expedition in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, N.L., last month, called Exercise Sub-Zero.

Jacob Brown, 17, is a member of the 1231 Kensington Army Cadets. He was among 18 senior cadets from the Atlantic provinces who went on a three-day, 40-kilometre snowshoe trek. They pulled all necessary equipment on sleds.

Brown admitted the expedition was tough.

"It wasn't easy pulling all of our gear with us, cooking in the snow and sleeping out in tents, but it was something I felt that I worked hard to prepare for."

Brown is the regimental sergeant major of his cadets, and worked hard to qualify for the expedition.

Cadets were selected on their physical fitness, leadership skills and participation in other aspects of the cadet expedition program.

The Kensington army cadets parade every Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. in Slemon Park. Anyone between the ages of 12 and 18 can join for free. Contact Captain Tracy Enman at 854-2215 or Tracy.Enman@cadets.gc.ca.
