Stealing beverage, glasses brings three days in jail
SUMMERSIDE – After picking up some chocolate milk and drinking it in the store, John Joseph Phillips thought he’d try on some reading glasses.
The Summerside man took the tags off, donned the glasses and left Zellers without paying for them or the beverage.
Phillips, 37, pleaded guilty to the July theft in Summerside Provincial Court this week.
He told Judge Jeff Lantz he’d left to check his bike and had money to pay.
Lantz seemed skeptical, asking Phillips if he’d removed the tags.
Phillips said he just did that to try them on. He also told Lantz he was getting help with addictions.
Lantz took into account this theft was relatively minor. He sentenced Phillips to three days in jail and he must pay a $50 victim surcharge.
