Western Capital thrilled to drafted by by P.E.I.
CHARLES REID Transcontinental Media
CHARLOTTETOWN -- Don't woe the late-round picks at the 2009 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft.
Josh Currie of Charlottetown isn't after the P.E.I. Rocket selected him in fifth round, 79th overall, on Saturday in Moncton.
And the 16-year-old Summerside Western Capitals forward couldn't be happier.
"It feels pretty good. I kind of had a feeling I was going to be drafted by the Rocket after talking with Kent Hudson (Rocket general manager and P.E.I. scout)," said Currie.
Currie tallied 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists) in 45 games as a rookie last season with the Maritime Junior A Hockey League club and another three points in nine playoff games.
The rugged Caps earned a league-best 39-13-0-2 record, dominated the league playoffs in its Kent Cup championship run and won the Fred Page Cup and a berth at the national championship Royal Bank Cup.
Now Currie's next step won't be an easy one. P.E.I. is stuffed full of forwards and roster spots are scarce.
Currie knows heavy off-season training and hard work at training camp, which starts Aug. 19 in Pownal, are two things he will need.
A bit of familiarity can't hurt either; he was a member of a peewee team representing the Rocket at the tournament in Quebec a few years ago.
Hey, any edge helps.
"I was thinking about that before the draft. I have a tiny little Rocket jersey hanging in my room," said Currie.
