| Brian Ellis gives the thumbs up as he walks across the province to raise money for the Kidney Foundation and for organ and tissue donation awareness. |
|
A new kidney, a new outlook, Brian Ellis is walking the Island, tip to tip, for the second year to raise money and awareness.
Walking with Brian
• Kidney transplant recipient Brian Ellis, 47, is hoping to raise $7,500 during this, his second cross-Island walk, for the Kidney Foundation of Canada, P.E.I. Branch.
• Last year’s target of $5,000 was met.
• The Summerside resident started his walk at East Point.
• He’s gone through two pairs of sneakers so far.
• He walks eight hours, or 30 km, a day.
• Received $100 cheque from Mayor Basil Stewart after reaching Summerside Wellness Centre noon Thursday.
• Brian has added 50 pounds since his walk last summer, when he was on dialysis.
• He has to drink large quantities of water to keep his kidney healthy.
• Getting a transplant “is like Christmas, birthdays and your first love experience all rolled into one.”
• He is walking up to 80 km farther this year, for a total of 308 km.
• The walk ends Sunday in North Cape.
• Brian takes many anti-rejection pills a day to protect the kidney.
• He says he is walking to pay back those who helped him stay healthy and to promote organ transplant awareness.
• Brian visits kidney patients while travelling the Island.
• Several sponsors are on board, including Tim Hortons, Kidney Foundation, public sector unions, accommodations owners and individuals.
