SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – To mark National Heritage Week (Feb. 19 to 25), staff with the City of Summerside and Culture Summerside are gearing up for the annual Mayor’s Heritage Tea.

The tea, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 16, at 1:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber of City Hall, is the platform for presenting the Summerside Heritage and Culture Awards.

The awards originated in 2011 to bring recognition to heritage and cultural activities within the city.

Nominations from the public were called for back in December, with a committee of community members and culture staff selecting the recipients.

The tea will also feature a dramatization with a flashback of 100 years ago when the then town experienced the repercussions of Spanish Influenza.

The tea honours the National Heritage Week theme “Heritage Stands the Test of Time” as determined by the National Trust of Canada. The theme is designed to inspire Canadians to embrace, explore, and enjoy our enduring heritage.
