SUMMERSIDE – Bringing Pride PEI events to Summerside has been a conversation had for over a year since Nancy Beth Guptill made a Facebook page called Include Summerside.

And as the page started to receive requests to hold Pride events in Summerside Guptill reached out across Pride networks to see if it were possible.

Guptill is the the Pride PEI West Coordinator.

“After that, I reached out to Pride PEI because I knew a few that were on the board.”

Conversations were then exchanged to try and get some events in Summerside for the 2017 Pride week that took place in July.

“We just didn’t have enough time to execute on that, so we started discussing it again the following fall.”

This year Summerside will hold its first Pride event on April 28 in partnership with PEI Lobster House at the Shipyard to anyone that is interested in attending, said Guptill.

“Whether you are from the queer community or if you’re straight, we’re still all a part of the same community.”

If minors under the age of 19 that would like to attend the event they have to fill out the youth registration form online and be accompanied by an adult. The deadline for the registration is the April 28 and has to be completed by 4 p.m.

The main goal for the launch is for people to come out for a meet and greet, said Guptill.

“The goal is for Pride PEI to share, with the community, their role plus we’re looking to obtain feedback from the community in terms of what they would like to see from Pride PEI in Summerside.”

The event will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. There will be presentations and special guest speakers.
