SUMMERSIDE – Like most kids, Layla Muttart was thrilled when a piece of candy came her way. But for her mom, Laurie, the Downtown Summerside Santa Claus parade is about much more.
“It really represents the magic of Christmas. It’s my favourite part. I really like that it shows what the holiday means without the presents.
“It’s always a great time, and I always say we need to get together and take in events like this more often. I want her to know the spirit of the season.”
Muttart brings her daughter to the parade every year.
“My favourite part is Santa,” said Layla with a laugh.
“I like the lights. My favourite colour is red.”
People crowded Water Street in downtown Summerside to get a glimpse of Santa and about 50 other floats that participated in the parade.
Jamie Rogers’ favourite part of the Christmas parade is seeing the face of his daughter, Celena, as Santa drives by.
“It’s what it’s always been about. We come here every year. It’s always a lot of fun, we get to spend time with family.”
Celena added, “I like getting candy. But I also like spending the time with my dad.”
Parade organizer Larissa Harris said it was an incredible success.
“We usually have about 30 floats participate. So to have 50 is pretty great. It was a really fabulous night.
“There were a few… hairy moments today while we were setting up. But once things got going it really started to take off.
“It was a really successful way to kick off the Christmas season. I think everyone is pretty excited.”
