January 27 is Family Literacy Day in Canada. Family Literacy Day is a national initiative to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

For a second year, the P.E.I. Public Library Service is partnering with the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance to host a special bilingual Family Literacy Day celebration at the Summerside Rotary Library. Families are invited to visit the library on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to enjoy fun hands-on literacy activities, music, face painting, snacks, and free book giveaways.

Libraries across P.E.I. will also be holding smaller Family Literacy Day events on Jan. 27. If you are unable to join us in Summerside, visit your local library to find an event near you.

For more information about services and materials available from the Summerside Rotary Library, visit the library at 57 Central St. in the Inspire Learning Centre, check out the website www.library.pe.ca, check out Facebook, or call 902-436-7323.
