By about this time last year a group of volunteers, dubbed the Fab Five, had helped mobilize an entire community to get in on the preparations for the delivery of O’Leary’s grand prize as Kraft Hockeyville 2017.
On Friday night, at the P.E.I. Potato Blossom Festival’s Farmers’ Awards Banquet, the Fab Five, Della Sweet, Tammy Rix, Joanne Wallace, Dean Getson and Bill MacKendrick, and their spouses, was awarded the Irma Dumville Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award. MacKendrick accepted the award on the group’s behalf.
The group was praised for taking on the challenge of motivating and engaging the community in a shared cause.
“It is the ability to have others see that as a collective we can move mountains,” MLA Robert Henderson read from their citation “Watching the momentum build as the community, province and country got behind them was truly spectacular.”
O’Leary was declared national winner of the Kraft Hockeyville title in April, 2017 and the prize, which included a festival weekend, complete with the Stanley Cup, in O’Leary, an NHL exhibition game in Summerside, and presentation of a cheque for $100,000 in arena upgrades, was delivered last September.
“They shy away from the recognitions and accolades,” Henderson acknowledged, “but that does not mean they can escape our gratitude.”
