Long days have their rewards

From playing on, and helping out on, the family farm as a child to working there fulltime after graduation, Gary Dunn is now a partner in the Dunn family’s dairy farm and this year’s recipient of the P.E.I Potato Blossom Festival’s Kent Phillips Memorial Young Farmer of the Future Award.

The award was presented to the father of two during the festival’s annual Farmers’ Awards Banquet on Friday night.

The citation references the long hours of dedication dairy farming entails and how waiting for a cow to calf, and checking in on her regularly, can be tiring. “Actually seeing a calf being born, taking its first breath and trying to stand for the first time on those wobbly legs has a way of giving tonight’s nominee back his energy and zest.” The award recognizes the dedication and commitment of the third-generation farm owner.
