ALBERTON – The Western Regals showed Wednesday night they are still very much alive.
The Regals prevailed 7-1 at the Jacques Cartier Arena to narrow the Mid-Isle Matrix’s lead to 2-1 in the best-of-five P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League championship series.
The Matrix will look to clinch the league title with a win in Game 4 on home ice at Community Gardens in Kensington on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A Regals’ win will force a fifth and deciding game back in Alberton on Friday at 8:15 p.m.
Brayden Handrahan’s goal at 11:01 of the second period would hold up as the winner. He made good on a nice feed in front by Isaac Callaghan.
Handrahan and Callaghan paced the Regals with two goals and an assist apiece. Alex Morrissey also had two goals, including the only marker of the first period.
The Regals, who received solid goaltending from Cole Gallant, were leading 3-1 after the second period, and Morrissey put them up 4-1 on the power play just 11 seconds into the third period.
Jean-Luc Duguay was in goal for the Matrix.
The Matrix, who was assessed seven minors and two 10-minute misconducts, gave up two power-play goals. The Regals were assessed five minors and a 10-minute misconduct.
