The business, which sells primarily homemade soy-based bath and beauty products, has been a regular staple of the Summerside Farmers Market and Three Oaks Senior High craft fair for a number of years, but has now set up a more permanent shop at 6 Queen St. in Summerside (behind Artist’s Ink in the Journal Pioneer building).
Owner Lesley MacKinnon, of Grand River, said she felt now was a good time to set up because of the upcoming tourist season and because she’d like to see more little shops in downtown Summerside.
“We like the building, we’d love to see more little things like this going on in Summerside, but I mean this building especially. It’s a great little spot,” she said.
MacKinnon started getting into soy-based products about 15 years ago because she found her paraffin candles were giving her headaches. She switched to soy-wax candles and her headaches cleared up. From there she started researching soy’s versatility and discovered its uses in various kinds of cleaning and beauty products.
She now makes various kinds of soaps, balms, bath and cleaning products. Most of it is made at her home studio, but she has a small workshop in her new Summerside location as well.
“This was kind of a hobby that went wild and turned into a business,” she said.
