Langley is a chef and budding entrepreneur and she would move home to Summerside in a hummingbird’s heartbeat if she thought she could pursue her business dreams here.

“I’d love to move home. I love P.E.I. but I still need to be able to make a future for myself,” said the owner of Scouts Canning/Groundwork Food.

Langley is an example of the kind of person the City of Summerside is interested in talking to. A son or daughter of the community whose moved on to bigger things, but who has an eye towards coming home.

To that end, the City of Summerside is hosting a ‘Summerside in Toronto’ night on June 3 at The Spoke Club.

The event is being promoted as an opportunity for Summerside expats to meet the city’s new mayor, Bill Martin, and “hear about his vision for the city's future, reconnect with the Island and learn about exciting developments and opportunities that await.”

A delegation from the City of Summerside and Summerside Regional Development Corporation is attending the e-Health Conference and Trade Show at Metro Toronto’s Convention Centre from May 31 to June 3, and while they’re there, they are participating in a handful of economic outreach meetings; one of which is the expat night.

Reached Friday, Martin said he has high hopes for the all the events taking place that week.

It’s an opportunity to have the face-to-face time with business leaders that is so critical in establishing working relationships, he said, and potentially attracting investors.

“I’ve always believed that if I have an opportunity to get in front of a group of people we can sell them on the merits of everything we have in Summerside,” said Martin.

Langley likes the idea of holding an ‘expat’s night,’ and is interested to hear what Martin has to say, but she needs to hear something truly advantageous before she’s lured home, in spite of how much she might want to.

“So the only thing that’s kind of keeping me back is that I live in a city where there is a tonne of money flying around all over the place and if you work for it you can get it easily. But in Summerside – there’s not a lot of work there. I’m not saying one is better than the other … but I have better odds here, starting a business, starting a brand, creating a product line.”

The expat night is free to attend, but anyone who wants to participate is required to RSVP and register online; that link can be found here: https://onthree.wufoo.eu/forms/calling-all-former-and-prospective-islanders/.
