There are changes afoot at the corner of MacEwen Road and Water Street East.

The commercial property at 601 Water Street East has been purchased by Summerside Mayor Bill Martin and his wife, Josette, who own the adjacent Water Street Bakery.

The Martins have considered purchasing this property for a number of years, but the circumstances never aligned to the point where they were willing to make the jump. However, that changed recently and they were able to come to agreement with the previous owners.

Martin said that the closing date for the sale is April 13, and that renovations to the building will start shortly thereafter.

“You won’t recognize it,” said Martin.

He added that the property was originally built as an A&W restaurant in 1977/78. It has gone through a number of owners since then, but has not had any significant renovation work done in some time.

There are currently three commercial spaces in the building, but only one is in use by long-time tenant, Jade Garden restaurant. The Jade Garden will remain as a tenant after the purchase.

As for the other two spaces, Martin said they are available for rent and will be renovated inside and out.
