There are some big changes afoot in the heart of Kensington, especially for anyone with an interest in meat pies, fresh fish and eating out.

The Greco location has been torn down to make parking for complete makeover of the former barn-like Kensington Club.

The club will be rebranded as Broadway 45.

The Home Place restaurant and catering services, including staff, will be moving to the new Broadway 45 location.

The Home Place meat pies, a secondary business of founder, now former owner Glenda Burt, will also move to the new location.

A B&B will continue to operate at the Home Place's previous location at 21 Victoria Street East.

A & R Adventures purchased the former Kensington Club at 73 Woodleigh Drive two years ago. Now it is under renovation to a new restaurant.

The company also purchased the Home Place.

Ramona and Austin Roberts are the proprietors of the company. They have been preparing for this project for some time and are happy it’s finally started.

“It was time to do something with it. It’s too big of a building to just be left vacant,” said Ramona.

The restaurant redevelopment is also affecting surrounding properties.

The adjacent Greco Pizza building at 45 Broadway St. has been torn down to make parking spaces for the restaurant. The “Coulson building,” at 49 Broadway Street North, is being renovated into a fish market and offices with plus even more parking spaces.

Coreen Pickering and husband Duncan Smith have partnered with the Roberts family to operate the new restaurant, catering service and meat pie production.

Pickering said she and Smith, who is a chef, have been dreaming of having their own restaurant for years and this opportunity to take over from Burt’s hard work was fortuitous.

“It was kind of a no-brainer on our end. It was a great opportunity and made that dream come true for us,” said Pickering.

That transition alone has been interesting, said Ramona, as the community has proven very protective of Burt’s meat pie recipe and her brand in general.

“Glenda has a very loyal following and if we can encourage those people to come and try the same type of food, with a lot of the same faces they’re used to up there, then that gives us a start,” said Pickering.

Roberts expects Broadway 45 will be open for business by the end of June.

For pizza lovers concerned about the fate of Kensington’s Greco, it’s moving, not closing.

The outlet will move temporarily to the Morell Needs gas station, but A & R Adventures is planning to tear down the current New Annan Irving gas station and build a new service station which will house the Greco long-term.
