Former P.E.I. premier and retired senator, Catherine Callbeck, will be a featured panelist at the 2016 Women in Business Symposium on May 17 in Charlottetown.

The symposium takes place on May 17 in Charlottetown at Memorial Hall in Confederation Centre of the Arts.

“The mandate of the P.E.I. Business Women’s Association (PEIBWA) is to support women in business — and those who want to be in business. By offering the Women in Business Symposium, now in it’s third year, we are able to directly support Island women to follow their dreams of business success,” said Mary Jane Webster, president of PEIBWA. “This unique learning opportunity will help foster the personal and professional capacity of Island business women, professionals and entrepreneurs through a program designed to meet their needs.”

Callbeck served as premier of P.E.I. from 1993 to 1996, making Canadian history by becoming the country’s first elected woman premier.

She was appointed to the Senate in 1997, retiring in 2014, and served as a Member of Parliament from 1988 to 1993.

As well, it was recently announced that Callbeck would receive the Order of Canada.

In addition to her long and varied political career, she ran a successful retail business with her family on the Island.

Unlike the majority of panels happening during the symposium, she will be presented in An Intimate Conversation with Catherine Callbeck a live one on one interview on stage.

“Catherine will share candid stories from her incredible career in both business and politics,” said Hannah Bell, PEIBWA executive director. “Nothing will be off limits for this inspiring session.”

Rounding out the panelists are Tara Costello, from Ahead in the Game; Kimberly McIntyre, from Kuriosities Jewelry; John Barrett, from Vesey’s Seeds; and Meaghan Blanchard, cultural entrepreneur.

More panelists will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
