The Maritime Beef Council (MBC) is hosting the Atlantic ministers of agriculture at what has been dubbed the first Atlantic Beef Summit
The summit will highlight the Maritime Beef Sector Growth Strategy to each provincial agriculture minister from the Atlantic region. It will also provide an opportunity for provincial program development officers to discuss how the next policy framework can support the Maritime strategy.
“The Maritime Beef Council board of directors and provincial cattle association staff have worked tirelessly over the last 16 months to bring the Maritime Beef Growth Strategy from a thought to a comprehensive plan for the future of the Maritime beef sector in the region,” says MBC Chairman Nathan Phinney.
MBC general manager Ellen Crane added that before this strategy was completed, the Maritime beef sector lacked long-term focus and direction for using the resources at hand.
“The Maritimes is blessed with relatively abundant and reasonably priced cropland, and more than adequate rainfall to support cattle production efficiencies as good or better than most beef producing regions of the world,” says Crane.
“All we really needed was a plan for how to use it effectively.”
Also on the agenda for the meeting is: A plan to increase the Atlantic herd by 10,000 cattle over the next 10 years, new entrants and young farmers into the industry and market growth.
