United States beats Belarus

SUMMERSIDE -

SUMMERSIDE -- The United States defeated Belarus 6-1 at the 2009 World Junior 'A' Hockey Challenge on Tuesday night.

The win evened the United States' record at 1-1 (won-lost) while Belarus fell to 0-2.

In quarter-final action Thursday, the United States will take on Sweden at 2 p.m., and Canada West will face Belarus at 7 p.m. A Canada West win will set up a semifinal matchup against Canada East on Friday night.

Shane Berschbach (2), Beau Bennett, Colten St. Clair, David Gerths and Derek DeBlois scored for the United States.

Kiryl Brykun broke United States goaltender Eric Mihalik's shutout bid with 32 seconds left in the second period.

Overall, the United States outshot Belarus 37-26.
