SUMMERSIDE - Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in Summerside Monday evening for the holiday season, riding in style on the final float in the city's annual Christmas Parade.
Hundreds of people lined city streets to watch as the 40 entries - from bands and colourful floats to antique cars and horses - wound their way through the downtown before ending at County Fair Mall.
There, Santa greeted adoring youngsters as awards were given to the top entries. First place went to the Department of Transportation while second was awarded to DP Murphy Inc. and Canadian Tire walked away with third.

Just a question that many of us standing there watching last night were wondering...Why does it seem that the floats go by so quickly??...Some of the kids were running to keep up with their float...lol..but all in all it was a great parade and thank you to all that took part....you made my two year old grandson's night!!Cheers!!

I would like to know why Santa was driving sobey's shopping carts. People complain that chirstmas is becoming so commercial well having sobey's shopping carts instead of reindeer is a little commercial. I feel bad for all the parents that now have to explain to their kids why there were no reindeer.
Only in a Summerside parade. -

Virginia...Thank you for your response, although I don't agree with it, I can see your side of it. In my opinion, people who have children will MAKE time to attend the parade no matter whether the parade is in November or December. If I know the parade is December 20th then I get my shopping done earlier in the week and I am ready for that night. As far as the weather, sure it was great but it would have been even nicer in August...? It is a Christmas parade! I do not see anyone having a problem putting on a winter jacket and mitts in December with a little light snow in the forecast and a glass of hot chocolate in hand enjoying a magical winter night. Instead it was on a green evening in November with leaves blowing around and no snow in sight. Just my opinion but maybe a December parade next year. Enjoy your holidays !

Hi D,
The reason we do the parade in November is to get full participation as was evident in last nights parade. The closer it gets to Christmas the busier people are. The weather is also a factor that has to be considered, and we were blessed with a beautiful night this year.
Thanks,

Virginia this question is for you? Why is the Santa Claus parade not oh I dont know in December or closer to Christmas? Kids see Santa and then have to wait over a month until Christmas. Wouldnt it make more sense to have it say the 20th of December? You may be trying to get people to shop earlier I dont know but people are only going to buy what they can afford to whether they do it in Nov or Dec.......

As Coordinator of the Downtown Summerside Santa Claus Parade, I would like to say Thank You to all the participants in the parade, and to everyone who helped in any way.
It was a great feeling to see so many people enjoying the parade and the image of the smiling faces of children will be forever in my memory.
It was a great night and we hope to see everyone again next year!

Most other parades are held this time of year. It is only a month till Christmas and the Ch'town parade is on Saturday.
Tis the season, yes?
Most comments are that the parade was great, the best in years, great weather and so on.
Kudos to Downtown Summerside Inc. for putting such a great event together!
