Cornwall - Goaltender Mark Arsenault was named Player of the Game in helping the Tignish Perry's Construction Aces to a 4-1 win in their first game of the Maritime-Hockey North Junior "C" Hockey championships Friday morning at the APM Centre.
"He played unbelievable," Aces coach, Norman Hackett, said of Arsenault's goaltending. "Only for Mark, it would have been over before it started."
The Aces first win was over defending tournament champs Shediac-Cap Pele Predateurs. The Predateurs opened the tournament Thursday night with a 2-1 win over Harbour Crunch from Musquodobit, N.S.
The game was scoreless until the second period and the Aces led 2-0 heading into the third.
Kramer Perry, whose report to the Armed Forces was delayed so that he could play in the tournament, opened the scoring for the P.E.I. Minor Junior champions.
The team's top scorer, Morgan DesRoches, also scored in the second, and Tyson Arsenault and Colby Callaghan put the game out of reach.
Assisting for the Aces were Brett Corcoran (2), Alex Tremblay (2), Travis Shea and Mikey O'Halloran.
Penalties were a problem for the Aces, taking 12 of the 21 called in the game, but their penalty killing was relatively successful.
The Aces also took advantage of their opponents' penalties, scoring two goals on the powerplay. The Predateurs' lone goal was scored while the Aces were short-handed.
