SUSSEX, N.B. -- Willem Slauenwhite of New Haven skied to the top podium spot in races at the Alpine New Brunswick Stewart McKelvey Cup Alpine Ski Races at Poley Mountain in New Brunswick on the weekend.
Racing in K1, the Grade 8 student won the giant slalom and Kombi race on Saturday and took silver in the first slalom race on Sunday, before finishing the day with gold in the final slalom race.
Slauenwhite races next at Ben Eoin in Cape Breton in February.
Teammates Josh Toombs of Charlottetown and Zach Roswell of Hunter River competed in K2.
Toombs had strong top-five showings in giant slalom and Kombi races in his first year in the K2 ranks.
The Island skiers competed against athletes from Ben Eoin, Martock and Wentworth N.S., Crabbe, Farlagne and Poley, N.B. The K2s travel with the older 'J' athletes to compete at Martock, N.S., in the Founders Cup this weekend in the next stop on the Maritime Alpine ski race circuit.
