The Huskies, who have won just one game in league play so far this season, scored two comeback victories in the six-team Panther Invitational at Louisville Middle School.
The Huskies opened play with a 62-54 win over Bliss Carman from Fredericton, N.B., before running up against the top team in New Brunswick for their age division. They lost to Riverview 64-41 to finish pool play at 1-1 (won-lost).
The Huskies then fell 56-49 to the host team in a close semifinal game.
That loss sent them into the bronze-medal game against George Street.
After falling behind by 16 points, the Huskies fought back to tie the game and force overtime. They ended up claiming the bronze medal with a 61-59 win.
“They came back from deficits three times, and won two of them,” coach Jeff Willson related.
Hernewood was the only Island school in the tournament.
“The guys did a fantastic job,” Willson commented.
Earning player-of-the-game honours for the Huskies were Josh Bourque, Alex MacNaught, Noel Cousins and Dalyn Harper. Hernewood hustlers of the game were Mackenzie Brennan (2), Jody Stetson and Ryan Keizer.
