Hernewood girls upset Athena

SUMMERSIDE – The fourth-seeded Hernewood Huskies upset the No. 1 team, Athena Hawks, 44-21 in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association/Domino’s Pizza Midget West Division basketball playoffs on Tuesday.

Lexi Getson scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Huskies, who also received 14 from Sami Sentner. Sarah Woodside added five.

For Athena, Rebecca Parnham (8), Katrina Martin (6) and Taylor McAulay (3) were the top scorers.

The Huskies led 26-12 at the half.

Other semifinal

In the other Midget West semifinal, No. 2-ranked Summerside Intermediate defeated third-seeded Kensington 40-24.

Summerside Intermediate, led by Carrie McGuire (14), Julie Campbell (8) and Tiffany Cameron (7), was in front 19-12 at halftime.

Kelsey Haslam, Shannon MacFadden and Brooke Johnson all had four points for Kensington.

Summerside Intermediate and Hernewood advance to next weekend’s provincial championships. Summerside Intermediate will be the No. 1 seed from the west, and Hernewood will be No. 2.

AA boys

In the AA boys’ West semifinals, No. 1 Athena coasted to a 44-28 victory over the fourth-seeded M.E. Callaghan Cougars.

The Hawks were in front 19-12 at the half.

Evan Tynski (12), Max Hammer (10) and Matthew Tanton (10) were Athena’s top point-getters. Jake Shea (10) and Colton Chaisson (8) led M.E. Callaghan.

The score between No. 3 Hernewood and No. 2 Summerside Intermediate was not reported by press time.

Both winners also advance to next weekend’s provincial championships.
