SUMMERSIDE – The popularity and growth of gymnastics in schools continues to grow.

That is according to Rick MacKinnon, school sport co-ordinator for the P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA).

The PEISAA is the governing body for school sports in the province.

“Gymnastics is a sport for everybody,” said MacKinnon. “Participation provides both mental and physical health benefits through strength and endurance conditioning, social engagement and goal-setting.

“It also provides the foundation for participation and success in all other athletic activities. We are very lucky to have such great programs in our schools across Prince Edward Island.”

The PEISAA will host its annual provincial championships at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside on Saturday. Competition begins at 9 a.m.

National Gymnastics Week

The popular provincial championships also coincide with National Gymnastics Week, where over 700 Canadian clubs try to increase the awareness of the sport and celebrate its positive benefits.

“For the past five years, we have been attracting close to 400 spectators during the day,” said Paul Goguen, gymnastics commissioner for the PEISAA. “Summerside seems to be a central location with schools travelling (from) as far as Montague and Tignish. Parents don’t seem to mind the drive.”
