STRATFORD - RCMP are investigating the death of a person who was discovered Tuesday face down on a beach near a residential area.
Police ordered media to stay clear of the area noting the site had to at least initially be treated as a crime scene. Police blocked off a section of East River Road that overlooks the beach where the body was found.
It is believed police were notified mid-afternoon by a nearby resident that a body had been spotted on the beach at the foot of Mason Road. The RCMP called in the K-9 unit and a forensics team. A coroner also was led to the body on the beach. As many as six RCMP vehicles responded to the scene.
No details have been released about possible cause of death, age or gender.
From a distance, though, the body appeared to be that of a woman.
The person was lying face down, wearing jeans, running shoes and a jacket. A vehicle was parked at the end of Mason Road near where the body was found and no one came to move the car over the next several hours.
Police were at the scene for at least three hours before the body was removed.
It is not known whether the body was washed up on shore. The tide was out and southeasterly winds were gusting close to 50 km/hr on a rainy, cool afternoon.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Denis Morin says police are trying to piece together what they have and are following all leads.
