SUMMERSIDE -- There will be a new Canadian senior men's curling champion in 2009.
P.E.I.'s Mel Bernard eliminated defending champion Eugene Hritzuk with a 5-3 win in a third-place tiebreaker at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club on Friday afternoon.
It was a tight game throughout as neither team led by more than one point. And it came right down to Hritzuk's hammer shot in the 10th end as a measurement was required to determine P.E.I. was shot rock centre eight-foot biting the four-foot to steal one point.
Bernard, who is now 8-4, will face New Brunswick's Russ Howard (8-3) in tonight's semifinal at 7:30. The winner will face Ontario's Bruce Delaney (8-3) in Saturday's final at 2 p.m.
Also tonight, Manitoba's Lois Fowler (9-2) and British Columbia's Kathy Smiley (9-2) will meet in the women's semifinal. Nova Scotia's Colleen Pinkney (10-1) has secured a berth in Saturday's final.
