Tied for second at senior curling championships
SUMMERSIDE -- British Columbia's Kathy Smiley and Manitoba's Lois Fowler improved to 6-1 (won-lost) at the 2009 Canadian senior curling championships on Tuesday morning.
They are tied for second place behind Nova Scotia's Colleen Pinkney (5-0), who had the morning off. Pinkney plays Northern Ontario's Barbara Ward (4-2) at 2:30 p.m.
Smiley scored a deuce with last-rock advantage in the 10th end to defeat Ontario's Cheryl McBain (3-3), and Fowler stole single points in the final three ends to win 7-4 over Quebec's Rolande Madore (2-4). Saskatchewan's Deb Thierman (3-3) outscored Wendy Ondrack of the Northwest Territories/Yukon 10-7. Ondrack fell to 2-5.
In men's action, defending Canadian champion Eugene Hritzuk (4-2) of Saskatchewan won 9-2 over the Northwest Territories/Yukon's Brad Whitehead (0-7); Quebec's Mike Carson (2-4) pulled out a 7-6 extra-end decision over Manitoba's Brent Strachan (3-4), and Ontario's Bruce Delaney (4-2) stole single points in the final two ends for a 6-5 decision versus British Columbia's Brian Gessner (3-4).
New Brunswick's Russ Howard leads the men's standings at 6-0 and faces Alberta's David Olsen (2-3) at 2:30 p.m. P.E.I.'s Mel Bernard (5-0) puts his unbeaten record on the line against Newfoundland and Labrador at 7:30 p.m.
