SUMMERSIDE -
SUMMERSIDE -- Russ Howard of New Brunswick scored a single point in the 10th end to edge British Columbia's Brian Gessner 5-4 in Sunday afternoon's sixth draw at the 2009 Canadian senior curling championships.
The win improved Howard's record to 4-0 (won-lost) and guaranteed his Fredericton Curling Club rink top spot going into Monday's play.
The two other undefeated men's rinks - P.E.I.'s Mel Bernard and defending Canadian senior men's champion Eugene Hritzuk of Saskatchewan -- will go head-to-head in Sunday evening's 7:30 draw. Bernard and Hritzuk are 2-0.
In other Draw 6 games, it was Ian Fisher of Northern Ontario outscoring Brad Whitehead of the Yukon/Northwest Territories 10-7, and Newfoundland and Labrador's Bill Jenkins doubling Manitoba's Brent Strachan 10-5.
In women's play, Lois Fowler jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three ends over Newfoundland and Labrador's Barbara Pinsent en route to a 10-4 victory. Fowler, one of three undefeated women's teams, has sole possession of first place going into Sunday night's match against Northern Ontario's Barbara Ward (2-1) on the strength of her 3-0 record.
Also Sunday night, Nova Scotia's Colleen Pinkney and Saskatchewan's Deb Thierman will look to up their records to 3-0. Thierman faces P.E.I.'s Shirley Berry (0-2), and Pinkney takes on Alberta's Peggy Harper (1-1).
Also in Draw 6, British Columbia's Kathy Smiley downed New Brunswick's Sharon Levesque 8-2 to improve to 3-1, and Northern Ontario got by Wendy Ondrack of the Yukon/Northwest Territories 7-5. Levesque and Ondrack both fell to 1-3.
