At Canadian senior curling championships

SUMMERSIDE -- Mel Bernard of the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club is off to a 2-0 (won-lost) start at the 2009 Canadian senior curling championships.

Bernard scored a single point in an extra end to defeat David Olsen of Alberta 7-6 in Draw 3 early Saturday evening.

Bernard, third stone Blair Jay, second stone Doug Simmons and lead Earle Proude fell behind 4-0 after two ends, before rallying for a 9-6 win over Bruce Delaney from Ontario in Draw 1 on Saturday morning.

In women's play, Shirley Berry of the Cornwall Curling Club dropped a 7-6 decision to Alberta's Peggy Harper in Draw 3 to fall to 0-2. Berry lost 9-6 to Ontario's Cheryl McBain in the opening draw.

Berry's teammates are third stone Arleen Harris, second stone Danielle Girard and lead Carol Sweetapple.

Defending men's champion Eugene Hritzuk is also 2-0 after defeating Alberta 6-4 and Mike Carson of Quebec 5-3.

Nova Scotia's Colleen Pinkney and Saskatchewan' Deb Thierman lead the women's standings with identical 2-0 records.

Saturday's final draw goes at 8:30 p.m.
