SUMMERSIDE - Tiffany Sweet and her Maple Leaf Curling Club rink from O'Leary
captured the Sylvan Learning P.E.I. 2010 provincial 17-and-under
championship here at the Silver Fox on Sunday.
Sweet, who finished the four-day event 7-0 (won-lost), defeated Veronica
Smith of the Cornwall Curling Club in the 'A', 'B' and 'C' finals to claim
the girls' title. Sweet doubled Smith 6-3 in the 'A' final on Friday
afternoon, before pulling out identical 5-4 wins in Saturday's 'B' final and
Sunday's 'C' final, which required an extra end.
Sweet's teammates are third stone Chantal Clements, second stone Kathleen
O'Meara and lead Laura O'Meara. Clair Sweet and Ralph Sweet coach the rink.
Other members of the runner-up Smith rink are Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith
and Chloe McCloskey, with coaches Paul Smith and Sarah Fullerton.
Boys
In boys' action, there were different winners of the three sections.
Matthew MacLean of the Maple Leaf Curling Club got by the Kyle Hughes
combined rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club and Montague Curling Club
6-4 in the 'C' final Sunday.
Saturday, Jeff Taylor of the Cornwall Curling Club downed Hughes 7-3 in the
'B' final. Hughes stole a point in an extra end to edge Tyler Smith of the
Cornwall Curling Club 6-5 in Friday's 'A' final.
Hughes will face MacLean in today's final at 3 p.m. MacLean advanced with a
7-6 win over Taylor in the first championship-round game Sunday afternoon.
Playing with MacLean are third stone Marshall Smallman, second stone Kevin
Gallant and lead Alan MacLean, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shannon
Smallman. Tony Nabuurs, Taylor McInnis and Chandler Matheson, with coach
Arnold Nabuurs, round out Hughes' team.
The winning rinks will represent P.E.I. at the Atlantic 17-and-under
championships in Rothesay, N.B., from April 2 to 4.
Awards
Following Sunday's draw, the fair play and coaching awards were presented.
Skip Jenny McLean from the Silver Fox won the girls' fair play award, and
Alex Matters from Charlottetown took the boys' honour.
Pat Quilty, coach of the Tricia Sanderson rink from Cornwall, won the
coaching award for the girls' teams while Arnold Nabuurs, coach of the
Hughes rink, took the award for the boys' teams.
