SUMMERSIDE -- A total of 24 teams from around the Maritimes converged at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club for the seventh annual Jingle Bell Christmas junior cashspiel.
Three Summerside teams advanced to the finals with mixed results. The Erin Carmody foursome beat Anita Casey 8-7 in an extra end to win the girls' title in an all-Summerside final.
"It was just fantastic curling," said cashspiel organizer Sheila Compton. "The place was full of spectators."
Meanwhile, the Kevin Rice rink from the Montague Curling Club got by Sam Ramsay of the Silver Fox 8-7 in the boys' championship game.
On the boys' side, Rice defeated Spencer Pitre of the Western Curling Club in Alberton 9-6 in one semifinal. Meanwhile, the other semifinal was not played as the Mitch O'Shea rink conceded the game to Ramsay following a death of a family member of one of the rink's players.
The final game between Rice and Ramsay was very exciting and featured back-to-back scoring. It came down to the final shot of the 10th end as Ramsay wanted to draw to the four-foot for the win, but came up about an inch short.
Rice's teammates are Matthew Nabburs, Mark Nabburs and Keagan Matheson. Arny Nabburs is the coach.
Members of the Ramsay team are Justin Richard, Eric Pidgeon, Corey Millar and coach Peter Pidgeon.
Girls
On the girls' side, Carmody went through round-robin play with a perfect record. Carmody then trimmed the Katie Sharkie rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club 9-2 in one semifinal.
Other members of the Carmody rink are Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Jessica VanOuwerkerk and Darcee Birch. Al Ledgerwood coaches the rink.
Other members of the Sharkie rink are Alexis Wright, Lisa Moerike, Martha MacIntyre and coach Kathy O'Rourke.
In the other semifinal game, Casey needed 11 ends to win her game over the Taylor Clark rink from the Truro Curling Club. The final score was 7-6.
Casey's teammates are Madeline Campbell, Lauren MacFadyen and Meagan MacDonald, along with coach Leo Stewart.
MacFadyen and MacDonald spared with the team all weekend due to an injury and work schedules.
The provincial junior (20 and under) curling championships will be held at the Charlottetown Curling Club from Jan. 2 to 6.
