Head coach says lots of tough decisions ahead

KENSINGTON – Kyle Dunn liked what he saw during the first on-ice session for the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild.

“As a staff we were really impressed with the work ethic,” said Dunn, who is entering his first season as Wild head coach. “It was fast-paced right from the start of the ice time until the end.

“Guys were showing us a lot of things. It was really impressive, and it’s going to make for some tough decisions in the next week.”

It’s a big season for the Wild, who play in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League and will host the Atlantic major midget hockey championship tournament in early April.

“I’m really excited for the year and I’m looking to get right back to the rink and see if the kids bring that same intensity and effort,” said Dunn.

The Wild opened Monday night’s on-ice session with some skating, passing and shooting drills before a scrimmage.

“We did a few drills just in case nobody was on the ice this summer, although we’re sure all of them were,” said Dunn. “We wanted to get their feet under them and get the nerves out a little bit, and then get into a scrimmage. . .

“They set a high pace and a good tempo.”

Overall, around 35 players, including 13 returnees, are vying for roster spots. Dunn noted the Wild still have some potential returnees at junior camps.

“It’s a nice number and they are all kids who are right there,” said Dunn. “There are no easy decisions.”

Back on the ice

The Wild was off Tuesday and will scrimmage at Community Gardens on Wednesday and Thursday from 8 to 9:30 p.m., both days. The Wild coaching staff will get a chance to evaluate the players in game situations this weekend in a league jamboree in Moncton, N.B. The Wild is scheduled to play four games on Saturday and Sunday.
