SUMMERSIDE - For a preseason hockey game in late August the Summerside Western Capitals gave fans much more than just a building with air conditioning.

Daniel Walsh of the Pictou County Weeks Crushers attempts to block the shot of Matthew Morgan from the Summerside Western Capitals but couldn’t get to the ice in time.

In extra time it was the Pictou County Weeks Crushers who came up on top by a final score of six to five.

About 300 people were in attendance for the Caps first preseason game of the year on Saturday afternoon.

“We had a younger team in the lineup,” said Capitals general manager Pat McIver. “I thought the guys who played gave it a good effort.”

It was a tough start for the young team, falling behind 2-0 in the first.

Just minutes into the second period Joey Colatarci of Summerside was whistled for roughing and the Crushers took advantage on the power play.

Down 3-0, the Caps were desperate for scoring, that’s when Brad Power finally got his team on the board.

Five minutes later, the home team pulled it within one after a goal from team captain Jordan Buchanan.

The second period luck continued to fall Summerside’s way, this time it was Alex Bradley with the equalizer.

But the Caps appeared to have run out of steam late in the third when the Crushers scored two quick goals within a minute of each other to make the score 5-3.

An early third period goal by Summerside pulled the game back within one, but the remainder of the period seemed to be controlled by Pictou County.

Then, with just one second remaining in the third period, a prayer by Brad Power somehow found the back of the net and put the game into overtime.

In the extra frame it was Daniel Walsh who sealed the win for his team.

Saturday’s roster was comprised of mostly young players fighting for roster spots. McIver said the game wasn’t about winning but more importantly to find new talent.

“Wins are always nice but these games are for development.”

The GM said the team made three cuts on Saturday and expects many more to be made in the coming weeks as preseason comes to a close.

Summerside will travel to Pictou County on Sunday for a rematch, that game goes ahead at 3 p.m.
