HALIFAX – The Summerside SandSharks’ bantam team finished the spring hockey season on a very high note recently.
The SandSharks won four of five games en route to capturing the Atlantic Cup in Halifax, N.S.
After going 3-1 (won-lost) in round-robin play, Zach Thususka scored halfway through the second period and Devon Newberry provided shutout goaltending to lift the SandSharks a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Cole Harbour Huskies in a very intense gold-medal game. Dawson McCormack and Jack DesRoches set up Thususka’s game-winning tally.
Newberry was outstanding, stopping a flurry of shots in the third period to preserve the win.
In the round robin, the SandSharks defeated the New Brunswick Tigers 7-1, Colchester 5-4 and Dieppe 1-0 while losing 6-2 versus Cole Harbour.
Against the Tigers, Zhususka led the SandSharks with two goals and an assist while Patrick Bernard (2), McCormack (1-2), Alex Taylor (1-1) and Alex Wood rounded out the scoring. Brandon Hastings (2), Morgan Crossman (2), DesRoches, Alec MacKinnon, Sam McNeill and Dylan Mugridge assisted.
Newberry was the winning goaltender.
Zhususka netted a hat trick and earned an assist for a four-point effort in the SandSharks’ win over Colchester. McCormack and Crossman each had a goal and an assist while other helpers were credited to DesRoches and Josh Coulson.
Winning goaltender was Cameron Ralph.
Newberry earned the shutout and Crossman, assisted by Thususka, scored for the SandSharks versus Dieppe.
Taylor (1-1) and Crossman chipped in with goals in the SandSharks’ loss to Cole Harbour. Thususka, Hastings and Chandler Wood collected helpers.
Ralph was between the pipes.
The Atlantic Cup is the wrap-up tournament for the Atlantic Hockey Group that includes teams from all three Maritime provinces.
