Vipers drop high-scoring opener

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers lost their opening game at the 2014 Don Johnson Memorial Cup on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nova Scotia-champion Sackville Blazers overcame 2-0, 3-1 and 4-3 deficits to outlast the Vipers 8-6 in the opening game of the Eastern Canadian junior B hockey championship tournament at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

Jordan Mayhew, who had three goals and one assist, led the Vipers offensively and was named his team’s player of the game.

It was the first loss of this year’s post-season for the Vipers, who swept both the Island Junior Hockey League semifinal and final series.

The Vipers’ next game is against Newfoundland and Labrador’s Avalon Capitals on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
