The Kings County Kings have made it to Newfoundland for Atlantic midget girls hockey championship.

The team left Montague at midnight on Tuesday, arrived at the ferry terminal in North Sydney, N.S., at 9:30 a.m. It boarded the MV Highlanders at 12:15 p.m., but was unable to depart until 5 p.m.

Around 9 p.m. the ferry’s occupants were told the ferry was stuck in ice and would have to wait for a Coast Guard icebreaker. About 12 hours later the ferry freed itself and started moving again.

“It’s been a journey so far,” coach Jill MacPhee said from the ferry around 1 p.m. “I guess it’s something they will never forget. The girls seem to be in good spirits.”

The team has a three-hour bus ride from Port aux Basques to Deer Lake.

All three Maritime teams were on the same ferry.

It plans on getting a good walk in, having a good meal and attend the opening ceremonies tonight.

All round-robin games will now be three 15-minute periods with Sunday’s medal round being three 20-minute periods.

Just a thought, shouldn't they be in school, too many days missed already this year. Way too much emphasis put on sports on the Island and not enough on schooling
