Montgomery sparks Vipers to win in series opener

KENSINGTON – The  Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers have struck first in the best-of-seven semifinal series against the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings in the Island Junior Hockey League.

The Vipers, who had 20 straight full off-days before Sunday’s opener, spotted the Red Wings a 2-0 first-period lead before posting a 7-4 victory before 425 fans at Community Gardens on Sunday night.

Spencer Montgomery had the hot hand for the Vipers, scoring four goals, while Matt Stead (1-1), Jordan Mayhew and Josh Bowman also scored. Adam Wight (2), Brett Hogan (2), Ryan Murray (2), Zen Hamil and Brandon Gallant collected assists.

Jeremy Balderston (2-1), Fidan Feta (1-1) and Brandon Carter (1-1) answered for the Red Wings. Jarret McRae, Curtis Martell, Cleve McNeill, Benji Gaudet and Robbie Fraser picked up helpers.

The Red Wings led 2-1 after the first period, and the teams went into the third period tied 4-4.

Overall, the Vipers outshot the Red Wings 66-32, including period advantages of 20-10, 18-14 and 28-8. Winning goaltender was Grant Grady, and Chris Gallant was between the pipes for the Red Wings.

Game 2 of the series is at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
