Timberwolves stave off Capitals to take 1-0 series lead

Summerside Western Capitals

The Miramichi Timberwolves edged the Summerside Western Capitals 4-3 on home ice Saturday night, taking the first game of the best-of-seven Roger Meek Division semifinal series in the MHL (Maritiime Junior Hockey League).


Cole MacDonald led the Timberwolves with a goal and an assist while Billy Gaston added a pair of assists. Brad Power led the Western Capitals with two helpers.


MacDonald opened the scoring 8:31 into the game with a power-play goal, giving the 'Wolves a lead they'd take into the second period.

Brett Malone scored just under two minutes into the second to extend the lead to 2-0.

Cavan Fitzgerald answered back just over a minute later to get the Western Capitals on the scoreboard, just eight seconds before David Sweet scored to tie the game at two-apiece.

Bryce Milson scored 40 seconds after that, to complete a fast and furious minute of hockey and regain the lead for Miramichi.

Joey Colatarci netted a powerplayer marker at 7:16 to even the score at 3-3, before former Halifax Moosehead Trey Lewis potted the eventual game-winner for the Timberwolves at 10:21.

The goaltenders would take it from there, handling their business en route to a scoreless third period and a 1-0 series lead for the Timberwolves.

Clint Windsor stopped 20 of 23 shots for the 'Wolves win, while Simon-Pier Chamberland turned aside 31 of 35 shots for the Capitals.

Game 2 will go Monday , 7 p.m., at Eastlink Arena in Summerside.
