Win on Friday night givers Alberton-based team 2-0 lead

CORNWALL – The Western Regals have taken control of the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League championship series.

The Regals defeated the Mid-Isle Matrix 3-1 on Friday night to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five set. The Regals can win the provincial championship with a win at the Jacques Cartier Arena in Alberton on Saturday. The opening faceoff is set for 8:15 p.m.

In Game 2, played at the APM Centre in Cornwall, Jason Gallant was in on all three goals by the Regals – two goals and an assist. Brandon Williams also scored while TJ Shea (2) and Jeff Gaudet contributed assists.

Alex Wood netted the lone Matrix goal.

Mid-Isle led 1-0 after the first period, and the score was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Kristen Clements earned the goaltending win over Sean MacPhee.

The Regals were called for nine minors and one double minor for head contact. The Matrix picked up eight minors, one double minor for head contact and two 10-minute misconducts.

Both teams will compete in the Atlantic minor midget hockey championship tournament in Alberton from March 27 to 30. The Regals are the host team, and the Matrix will be the P.E.I. representative.
