Four-goal third period keys Falcons’ win in opener

MONTAGUE – The Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons are off to a winning start in the Island Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The Falcons scored four unanswered third-period goals en route to a 5-3 road win over the Montague Maniacs at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre on Friday night. The Maniacs will also host Game 2 in the best-of-seven semifinal series on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and the second-place Maniacs took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

Josh Kirkpatrick (2), Brandon Birt, Trevor MacKinnon and Harrison Nicholson scored for the Falcons, who finished the regular season in third place.

Damon MacDonald (2) and Stewart Branstrom countered for the Maniacs.

Winning goaltender was Daniel Nicholson, and Tyler Whiffen took the loss.

Referee Jeff Affleck called a total of five minor penalties in the game – three of those against Montague.
