Bantam Abbies take opener on McQuaid’s late goal

SUMMERSIDE – Chris McQuaid notched the winner at 14:47 of the final period as the Charlottetown Abbies edged the Summerside Capitals 4-3 in the opening game of the P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League championship series here Wednesday night.

Gavin Hickey and Thomas Casey assisted on the goal.

Casey, Patrick Young and Kallum Muirhead also scored for the Abbies. Other assists went to McQuaid, Kelly Barnett, Andrew Campbell and Jacob Hood.

Tyson Arsenault, with two goals, and Brodie MacArthur (1-1) scored for the Capitals. Noah Dobson, Sam Bernard and Connor McAulay each had an assist.

The Capitals led 2-0 after the first period, and the teams were tied 2-2 after the second.

Ava Boutilier made 17 saves for the Abbies while Evan Richard made 12 for the Capitals.

Game 2 in the best-of-five series is at Simmons Sport Centre in Charlottetown on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
