Aces, Flyers win semifinal openers

O’LEARY – The Tignish Aces and Mill River Flyers opened the best-of-three semifinal series in the O’Leary Recreational Hockey League with wins here at the Community Sports Centre on Tuesday night.

The Aces trimmed the Elmsdale Pogeytrain 11-4, and the Flyers topped the Cape Wolfe Maroons by an identical score.

The second games in each series were scheduled for Thursday night.

Aces 11 Pogeytrain 4

Jason Hackett scored four goals to lead the Aces, who received a hat trick from Ricky Hackett. Kenneth Gaudet (2), Jason Gaudet and Ivan Gaudet rounded out Tignish’s scoring.

For Elmsdale, Donald Stewart (2), Eddie Trail and Jeff Costain found the back of the net.

Winning goaltender was Mark Arsenault.

Flyers 11 Maroons 4

Jeff MacIsaac’s four-goal effort sparked the Flyers. Mikey O’Halloran (2), Aaron Sweet (2), Gussy Adams, Trevor Kinch and Darryl Donahue also scored for Mill River.

Kyle Cooke (2), Barry Cooke and Rory Costain countered for the Maroons.

Shelby Ellsworth recorded the goaltending win.
