O’LEARY – When great Prince Edward Island hockey rivalries are discussed, the O’Leary Maroons and the Tignish Aces are often in the mix.
Those senior hockey teams filled each others rinks with rabid fans for decades, and they hope to do so again, this time for a “friendly,” on Saturday, March 8.
The O’Leary Maroons and Tignish Aces’ alumni teams will play a benefit hockey game in aid of O’Leary Minor Hockey Association at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre at 7 p.m.
It was minor hockey parent Bethany MacIsaac, who came up with the alumni game fundraiser, and she didn’t have to look far to find someone to get the puck moving. She called on her brother, Darcy Harris, to build a Maroons’ team.
“Minor hockey needs a little support,” MacIsaac said. “We try to keep our rates affordable for our families, and with increased operating costs we are running short this year.”
Minor hockey holds a cold plate fundraiser every spring, and, while MacIsaac said it is always very successful, this year it was evident another fundraiser would be needed. She’s hoping the Aces-Maroons’ reunion will get them over the hump.
“I asked Trevor Kinch to get a team together for Tignish and kind of spark that rivalry up again, and get some people out to support it,” she added.
Kinch gladly obliged, bringing together a 14-member roster to take on their old rivals.
At least a half-dozen of the Aces’ players currently play on teams in the O’Leary Recreational Hockey League, but are eager to pull on the Aces’ jersey again.
Tickets to the game are available at the rink canteen and from minor hockey parents. They can also be purchased at O’Leary Kwik Way, Vinny’s and O’Leary Scotiabank. For all the tickets purchased at Scotiabank the bank will match those sales with a direct donation to minor hockey.
