In Game 1 of P.E.I. Midget AAA Female Hockey League final
CORNWALL – Makayla Oatway was the overtime hero for the Mid-Isle Wildcats in the opening game of the best-of-five final series in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Female Hockey League on Monday.
Oatway’s short-handed goal with nine minutes remaining in the second extra period gave the Wildcats a 6-5 win over the Kings County Kings in a game that didn’t lack excitement at the APM Centre in Cornwall.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 advantage after the first period, and held a 2-1 cushion following the second. The Wildcats increased the lead to 4-2 in the third period, but the Kings stormed back with two goals in less than a minute late in the third period.
Mary-Jo Fortin put the Wildcats back in front 5-4 with 38 seconds showing on the clock, but Maria Clinton’s second goal of the game with four seconds remaining in regulation time pulled the Kings even and forced overtime.
The Wildcats were awarded a penalty shot in the first overtime period, but were unable to beat Kings goaltender Nicole Jay.
Sasha Joyce led the Wildcats with two goals and an assist while Oatway, with her first of two goals in the game, and Jillian Lawless netted the other Mid-Isle goals. Marilyn Fortin (3), Teila Coulson, Alisha MacDonald and Bailey Simpson earned assists.
Hope Higginbotham, Alyssa Ferguson and Hannah Gormley also found the back of the net for Kings County.
Winning goaltender was Ashley Stead.
The final shots-on-goal totals were 47-45 in favour of the Wildcats, who were assessed 11 of the game’s 20 penalties.
Game 2 is scheduled for Montague on Wednesday.
